While traveling, you want to be sure that your hair is kept as long and beautiful as has always been. Also, you do not want to spend a lot of your time during your trip taking care of your hair when you could have spent that time having fun and enjoying your vacation.

In this post, I’ll share general guidelines to taking care of your hair while traveling as well as what you should bring with you on your journey to take care of your hair while traveling.

 

General hair tips for traveling

  • Try to protect your hair from the sun

When you’re traveling it’s hard to avoid the sun, especially when you’re traveling to hotter places. Put on a cap or head scarf to protect your hair from the sun to prevent overheating. It’s also a good trick to apply a small amount of sunscreen/block to your scalp! 

 

  • Brush your hair as often as possible

Don’t leave your hair without brushing for a long time. Essentially, you should brush your hair at least once a week or more. This is key in ensuring that your hair stays smooth and untangled. Brush when your hair is dry not wet.

 

  • Be mindful of the pool you swim in

When traveling, there is every tendency for you jump in a pool and cool down. If swimming is your thing, you need to be very careful about the pool you swim in as some chemicals in some pools can damage your hair. It’s a good idea when you hop out of the pool to take a quick shower to rinse out the chlorine or any other chemicals the pool uses.

 

  • Ensure you find the best hairdressers to do your hair

This one really applies if you’re traveling for longer periods of times. Sometimes you don’t have the time to get a haircut from your favorite salon or barber and have to make do with barbers and stylists in other countries.

If you need to get your hair done, try using google to find the best rated barbers/stylists. There’s hopefully wi-fi in places where you are staying so search away!

Another way could be getting a personal recommendation from a local or friend who’s traveled to your destination before. 

 

What to take along with you when traveling

There are some accessories you should carry with you when traveling so that you’ll have no problems taking care of your hair no matter your location. For electronic devices (like your travel dryer), ensure you check the voltage requirements and see if your travel location has the same voltage supply as your device.

Some of the materials to take along with you when traveling is

  • Brush and comb: A good travel-size wet brush or comb will do.
  • Hair covering and protection: You can take hats, hair scarfs or any other piece of protection to cover your hair with.
  • Travel hair dryer: Check the voltage requirement to see that it matches that of your travel location or buy there to be safe.
  • Dry shampoo
  • Headbands
  • Easy to wash hairstyling products
