Hey, thanks for tuning in to this in-depth review and styling tutorial of BluMaan’s Original Styling Meraki.
This review is sure to answer any questions that you might have about the product.
To save your guys’ time, I’ll be breaking this review and styling tutorial of Blumaan’s Original Styling Meraki down into a few parts. You can skip to whatever part is most relevant (most likely the product review, so skip about halfway down the page), but I’d hope you stick around for the whole thing! First, I’ll be introducing my own hair type so you guys have a reference point to how this product performs, then I’ll go into the performance of the product and finish off by speaking to how this product will work for other hair types.
My Hair Type
So firstly! My hair type. I’m an Asian guy so I understand the struggle a lot of us go through with poofy hair that loves to stick up. My hair is fairly wavy, and definitely thick. My hair does not like to cooperate despite being wavy & not nearly as stiff as some Asian hair. Once in a certain shape, the only way to make it restyle is to wash my hair with shampoo & conditioner and completely “reset” my hair. Not to mention, it also gets frizzy without quality products that can really nourish my hair to make it as healthy as possible. So, imagine something like the hairstyle above, except dark brown/black.
TL;DR, I have wavy, frizzy Asian hair and I am currently wearing it in a short-medium length forward quiff that was inspired by BluMaan himself! So check out his video on how he styles his short quiff because that’s basically how I do it too.
Original Styling Meraki Review
BluMaan’s first ever hair product that has gone through a couple formula changes over the years. How has it held up? Let’s find out.
The product comes in a similar packaging that hasn’t changed much over the years, except for the labeling. It’s a simple black plastic jar, and has the now iconic rhinoceros artwork on top. The product is an off white colour, and is fairly soft to the touch. It maintains a slight fiber-ness to it, as the first iterations were very fibery. It has a very slight, minty smell to it that I quite like, just enough to give some depth to the product, but not enough to be overwhelmed. Overall packaging is decent, there’s nothing too special about it.
As a Pre-styler
The product scoops out of the jar very easily. Not completely soft like a cream and has a bit of firmness to it, but very smooth and pleasant. Likewise, the product emulsifies very easily, but be careful not to emulsify this product too much; you might break down the fibers too much and end up with less hold in the end. So, after a quick and easy emulsifying process, you’re ready to finally use the product.
When applied into damp hair as a prestyler, it’s incredibly easy and the product goes right into the hair without any hassle. When using as a pre-styler, I’d recommend using less than you normally would. This will help avoid causing your hair to become too heavy or stuck together after blow-drying. Of course, play around with the amount to find the perfect amount that works for you as a pre-styler. Used as a pre-styler, Original will give your hair plenty of control when you’re finished blow-drying, a matte finish, and a very nice medium hold that leaves it easy to run your fingers through the hair and reshape it throughout the day.
As a Post-styler
On the other hand, when used as a finishing product, there can be some tugging depending on what kind of prestyler you used; using an oil would smooth out your hair and Original will apply much more easily, but using a tackier, more heavy holding prestyler would likely cause Original to tug a bit. For me, the tug is a good sign on dry hair as I know Original is definitely doing its job to give me great hold, a good amount of texture, and a slight healthy, natural sheen to my hair. My hair feels lightweight throughout the day, and I get to enjoy the finished result all day long.
Because of Original Styling Meraki’s versatility, I think that this product can be used for most hair types. If you’ve got thin hair, use a little less and play around with an amount that would works for you. Thick hair, this product will be great for you. Fine hair, this should also work well for you, but if you’ve thin and fine hair, then maybe not. Again, play around and see if you can find the right amount of product that works for you. Practice makes perfect.
I won’t go too in depth with this section because I think Original is so versatile and effective that most people can find a use for it if they want to incorporate it into their hair styling routine. Whether it’s to add control, hold, texture, or volume, Original can do all of those things. To find out even more, check out this article.
Original is one my favorite products in the hair product arsenal. It’s versatility and the finish is perfect for my hairstyles, whether it’s a short forward quiff, or a voluminous pompadour. It gives fantastic hold that maintains moveability and texture throughout the day. Finally, it gives a matte, yet healthy sheen finish to my hair. Put it all together and Original is hands down one of the best hair products I’ve used to date. I’d highly recommend trying out this product. 10/10.
