We love it. It’s part of who we are. But some days you probably want a break from wavy or curly hair. Am I right? On those days when you want a cleaner slick look you want to straighten your hair. Here’s some advice about hair straightening for men:
Your Trusty Brush or Comb, and Your Friend, the Blow Dryer
Depending on how wavy or curly your hair is, you might be able to get away with just using a brush or comb, and your blow dryer. I have wavy hair, and I can create straight hairstyles using only these tools. If you need something a little more high-powered, maybe you should go to your best friend…
Your BEST Friend: the Hair Straightener
Even if you use a heat protectant, a blow dryer is still damaging to your hair. A hair straightener is even more damaging. You’re basically applying heat directly to your hair. But it’s effective. So as long as you follow these rules you should be fine:
- DO NOT use a straightener on wet hair. You’ll burn your hair, you’ll see smoke, it’ll smell terrible, and it’s not a good scene
- DO use hair oils and a good shampoo – not while you use the hair straightener, but just in general. Thought I’d clarify that.
- DO use a heat protectant (Always!)
- DO go slow enough so you don’t have to go over your hair multiple times

Turn it up with a Keratin Treatment
If you’re looking for a more permanent hair straightening solution you can opt for a perm, but that can be extremely damaging. Another method that’s long lasting and actually good for your hair is a keratin treatment. This hair straightening treatment actually puts protein back in your hair and increases the shine. Check out this video about the keratin treatment from our friend, Jake Daniels. While you’re there, like his video, and subscribe to his channel!
So there you have it. Three pieces of advice about hair straightening for men. Wait! One last thing…
Love What You’ve Got
We hope you found this helpful, but one thing we should always remember is to love the hair we’ve got. Wavy, curly, straight, red, blonde, or purple, we should embrace what makes us different and special. And be the best version of ourselves every day no matter what.
